The scene on this kylix depicts four boys being courted by four youths, not adult men: the youths play the roles of erastes with the younger eromenos—roles the men played with them. On the left, a lone youth (1) leans on a staff, his hands on his hips, and his head bowed. Couple 2-3: the youth places his left hand on the back of the boy's head, perhaps intending to pull off his cloak. In his left hand, the boy holds two fruits, quinces or apples, and he takes the third fruit from the youth's hand, holding it by the stalk. Couple 4-5: the boy, leaning on a short, gnarled staff, pulls the youth toward him, clasping his left arm around his neck; with his right hand, he grabs the youth by the penis, who, in defense, grabs the youth by the shoulder, but looks at him with an expression of devoted affection. Couples 6-7 are depicted in a similar pose. The youth stands with his knees bent and his head thrown back. His chin touches the boy's chin. He also holds a short staff. Pair 8-9: The youth exhibits a more relaxed and less intrusive demeanor than his colleagues; holding a staff, he places his right hand on the back of the boy's head, who, in turn, grabs the youth by the shoulder in defense. All the characters are dressed in cloaks. The youths wear sandals, and the boys are barefoot. The hair is very finely and individually rendered. Aryballi, sponges, and strigili, typical tools for gymnasium classes, are suspended in the background and complete the picture.
On the kylix is the standard exclamation about the beauty of the youth/boy, in this case, Athenodotus: «Αθενοδοτος καλος».
